03/10/2009 - Nashville, TN (Sportsbook Betting Lines) - Sergei Fedorov's tally 2:20 into overtime was the difference, and the Washington Capitals edged the Nashville Predators, 2-1, at Sommet Center.
Nicklas Backstrom scored the regulation goal for the Capitals, who snapped a season-long four-game losing streak. Jose Theodore stopped 27-of-28 shots to earn the victory, his 25th of the season.
Ryan Suter tallied the lone goal for the Predators, who have lost two straight since a season-high six-game win streak. The loss also ended a five-game home winning streak. Dan Ellis was excellent despite the loss, making 42 saves in the contest.
Regulation ended in a 1-1 tie, but Washington capitalized quickly in the extra period. Viktor Kozlov had the puck in the corner and dished to a cutting Fedorov out in front, who faked out Ellis and deposited the puck into the wide-open net at 2:20.
It didn't take long for the Predators to go out in front, as Suter's wrister from the top of the right circle gave the hosts the lead 50 seconds into the game.
Washington tied the game with 1:21 left in the second. Backstrom was the beneficiary of some tic-tac-toe passing by Ovechkin and Kozlov, and Backstrom deposited the puck past Ellis to even the contest.
Tomas Fleischmann appeared to give the Capitals the lead five minutes into the third, but his goal was waved off after officials ruled he kicked the puck into the net. Ellis was able to stop 17 shots in the third to keep Washington off the board, and the game went to overtime.
