McGregor led three scoring drive in the first quarter, finished 11 of 12 for 123 yards and rushed for a touchdown while leading the North team to a 51-3 romp over the South. He was named his team's most valuable player.

Another one of the highlights for the North came from Appalachian State's DeAndre Presley, the quarterback-turned-defensive-back. He returned a punt 65 yards for a touchdown late in the fourth quarter.

"I had several opportunities to talk with Joe about football and Brown University, and will cherish those memories. Coach Paterno has been an important part of our football tradition and we will continue to celebrate his storied career and life."

 

Paterno was a standout quarterback and defensive back at Brown. Under head coach Rip Engle, Paterno blossomed into the heady quarterback of the Bears' 8-1 squad in 1949.

 

After his senior season, Paterno took an offer from Engle to work on a part- time basis with the team's quarterbacks while awaiting graduation. Shortly after, Engle was named the head coach at Penn State and Paterno joined him as an assistant coach.

Ask any one of his former players how they feel about the man better known as JoePa, and they'll all have similar responses. Inspiration, pride and respect were only a few lessons Paterno taught in his days and he was the epitome of "We Are...Penn State."

 

"Forget the football aspect. We just lost a great contributor to our society. He was way more than a football coach. There are many living positive testimonies walking around because of Joe Paterno. He straightened out many lives," Millen told USA Today.

 

"He was rare. This was a real guy ... he was not a fake. Was he infallible? Absolutely not. He had his flaws; he made mistakes. But he was as close to being what you are supposed to be as anyone I ever have been around."
